If you have watched Dibakar Beanerjee’s deliciously off-the-beaten-track films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and the critically much-acclaimed hyper-linked (multi-level action cinema) LSD: Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, you will probably know the kind of non-formulaic films this talented director makes for the audience. In a fresh foray, he presents yet another gritty tale in his upcoming film Shanghai, starring Abhay Deol, Emraan Hasmi and Kalki Koechlin.
Though touted as a political thriller, the promo made it difficult to slot this one into any genre. Much like in his earlier films, the director weaves a gritty plot with a definite central idea and layers it with different emotions instead of sticking to one particular tone. Watch Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi carving out amazingly realistic characters. Emraan’s rustic, paan-chewing village thug immediately caught our attention when he gave a scornful smile, his paan-stained teeth flashing on the screen. Loosely inspired by the ‘India Shining’ political campaign and the inevitable way in which incongruous harsh reality caught up with mighty ambition, Shanghai looks like a promising exposure of political commotion portrayed in a realistic way. The trailer was refreshingly engaging and we liked it!
