Sonali Mukherjee suffered burns that disfigured her face when youths from her locality threw acid on her in 2003. And the case first made its way to the small screen via Crime Patrol, a show hosted by Anup Soni on Sony Entertainment Television. And that’s what created awareness of the case and nudged people to come forward to help Sonali. Her attackers were put behind bars for only four months and then were set free, while Sonali struggled to lead a normal life. So the makers of Kaun Banega Crorepati 6 approached Lara Dutta to help – the actor is known to work for the cause of such afflicted women.
Amitabh Bachchan, who shared photos of that episode on his social networking site, also posted: “Much too disturbed by the event at KBC of ‘doosra mauka’ … a second chance for those that have been unfortunate victims of trauma and violence … a young girl robbed of her entire body and youth by an acid attack on her … her face destroyed, lost her eyes, lost her hearing, lost her voice for 4 years .. 22 reconstructive surgeries later, she can now speak and hear … full of grit and determination to seek not just justice, but to become an example of faith and strength for others that get inflicted with such atrocities …They that inflict such damage are not humans …”
Kudos to you, Amitabh Bachchan and Lara Dutta, for taking up this noble cause!
