Actor and Iraq war veteran J.R. Martinez, who was named the 2012 Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal earlier this month, earned the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy Tuesday in this season’s Dancing with the Stars.
“A freaking amazing!!! Really?!,” Martinez wrote on his twitter account shortly after his name was announced. “I want to thank everyone who voted for @Karina_Smirnoff & I all season! Perfect finish to a memorable season!!!”
Martinez, until recently best known as an actor on “All My Children,” and his professional dance partner Smirnoff have often been crowd favorites in the widely popular television show competition.
Martinez squared off in the finals against Ricki Lake and Rob Kardashian.
“Look, if you had, one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted-One moment would you capture it, or just let it slip?” Martinez twittered right before Tuesday’s final dance and the announcement of the winner.
Martinez, a former U.S. Army soldier, suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body in 2003 when he was critically wounded by a landmine in Karbala, Iraq. He spent more than two years in the hospital and underwent 33 surgeries before going on to star on the daytime television drama “All My Children” for three years.
